LongΒ basketballΒ road trip, shortΒ memory.Β Or something like that.
Win,Β loseΒ orΒ however (is there even a thirdΒ option?)Β the Atlantic Coast ConferenceΒ opener went for Notre Dame basketball earlier inΒ the week atΒ Stanford,Β it was time to flush it and focus again on another opportunity to get a league win.Β A league road win.

Noie: Ranking the Top 25 arenas Notre Dame basketball has visited since 2000
This one Friday at a place that the Irish have never been against an opponent (Cal) itΒ likely wonβtΒ recognize from last seasonβs epic encounter.Β WeβreΒ deep into league play, which meansΒ thereβsΒ no time forΒ any teamΒ to feel sorry or satisfied.Β Too little time, too many games.
ThatΒ next chanceΒ comesΒ quicklyΒ in conference play.

Series history between Notre Dame basketball and California
Notre Dame leads 3-0 overall, 1-0 as ACC colleagues.
The teams met once last year in theΒ regular-seasonΒ finale at Purcell Pavilion. TheΒ game featured 17 ties and 14 lead changes andΒ wasΒ won by NotreΒ Dame, 112-110, in four overtimes.
Irish guard Markus Burton scored 21 of his 43 points, a program record for an ACC game, in the four overtimes. Graduate student Matt Allocco added 24 points while senior J.R. Konieczny, playing in his final Notre Dame game, added 13 points and eight rebounds.

This is Notre Dameβs first visit to Cal.
Notre Dame basketball at California storylines
β Heading into itsΒ league openerΒ TuesdayΒ at homeΒ against No.Β 13Β Louisville, CalΒ had won a league-best nine straight. ItΒ started 11-0 at homeΒ despite averaging a league-lowΒ 2,646Β in home attendance.Β Cal went 11-6 overall, 5-5 in ACC playΒ at home last year while finishing second to last β 17thΒ β for average home attendance (3,889).
β Coming clear of Tuesdayβs conference opener at Stanford, Notre Dame looks to either start 2-0 in ACC play for the first time sinceΒ 2017-18Β or avoid opening 0-2 for theΒ first time sinceΒ 2022-23.

β California is one of the leagueβs best-kept secrets, partly because it plays on the West Coast, but also because it had to rebuild its entire roster after losingΒ 11 of 14Β players off last yearβs teamΒ (which featured 10 transfers)Β that finished 14-19 overall, 6-14 in its first season in the ACC.
Keep an eye on …
Notre Dame G Logan Imes
He may have done it again far from home in a conference game that tippedΒ offΒ too late for some. The deadline for thisΒ CalΒ look-ahead was dueΒ a dayΒ before Notre Dame openedΒ ACCΒ play atΒ Stanford (thanks holiday print deadlines), but if this season is anyΒ indication,Β junior guard Logan ImesΒ likely didΒ something in that oneΒ that kept the Irish in the game.

A big drive. AΒ keyΒ 3. Big minutes as the secondary handler.Β ThatβsΒ who the 6-foot-4, 205-pound junior from Zionsville, Indiana was in non-conferenceΒ play, where he was one of sevenΒ Irish to appear in all 13 games.Β Imes averaged 4.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 18.7 minutes. He shot .422 percent from the field, .393 from 3 and .455 from the foul line. His points per game and minutes averages and percentages from the field and from 3 would be career bests.Β He scored a careerΒ bestΒ 12 points in the loss to Purdue Fort Wayne.
Imes has become a steadying voice of reason guy, someoneΒ the Irish need to wrap their two-game West Coast conference swing. IfΒ thatβsΒ the case, keep an eye out for No. 2.
California G Justin Pippen
DonβtΒ be fooled by the famous last name. Yes, his father, Scottie, was one of the best to ever do it and is a member of the BasketballΒ Hall of Fame, butΒ hisΒ kid alsoΒ hasΒ game.

The 6-3, 190-pound guard from the Los AngelesΒ area barely did anything last seasonΒ at Michigan (1.6 ppg., 0.7Β rpg., 0.5Β apg.,Β 6.7 mpg.)Β beforeΒ returning to the West Coast. Pippen is averaging 14.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and aΒ team-high 4.2 assists in 30.1 minutes.Β He’sΒ shooting .413 percent from the field, .358 from 3 and .813 from theΒ foul line.
Pippen played at least 25Β minutesΒ in each of his first 11 games. HeΒ had games where he scored 23 and 24 points, two gamesΒ where he grabbed at least nine rebounds and fiveΒ contests whenΒ he had at least five assists. He does a little of everything for the Bears. Just like his pops did for the Bulls.
