Daniel Cormier: I would have feasted on current UFC light heavyweights

Daniel Cormier sees a big gap in the skill set of the current UFC light heavyweight contenders.

Cormier, a former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, notched three title defenses when he ruled over the 205-pound division. His lone losses during his reign came to rival Jon Jones.

But Cormier notices a vast difference between the top contenders during his time and the ones right now, where Alex Pereira currently holds the UFC light heavyweight title.

“If I was at my prime in light heavyweight right now, there’s no wrestlers,” Cormier said in a recent Q&A for Alien Films. “I’d be just feasting on everybody. At light heavyweight, there’s no wrestlers. If I was in my prime, probably (would fight) Pereira because he’s the biggest star and you want to make the most money as a champion.

“But there’s no wrestlers. When I was fighting, the top five was me, Jones, Ryan Bader was an All-American, Phil Davis was a National champion, Rashad Evans was an NCAA All-American. We had so many wrestlers. Now there’s no wrestlers so it’s like yeah, I’d go fight at light heavyweight, not heavyweight.”

The current top five in the UFC’s light heavyweight rankings consists of Jiri Prochazka, Magomed Ankalaev, Carlos Ulberg, Khalil Rountree Jr., and Jan Blachowicz.
