Kafelnikov tips Jannik Sinner over Carlos Alcaraz – Talent or relentless work?

by

The rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz continues to fuel debates across the tennis world.

Few comparisons are sharper than the contrast between natural flair and relentless discipline.

Former world no. 1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov praised both players, highlighting their different values. For the Russian, Carlos is bigger talent, capable of producing breathtaking solutions in any situation.

His creativity, speed and shot-making have already delivered some of the most spectacular moments of the modern era, marking Alcaraz as a generational force.

Jannik, however, represents a different profile. Kafelnikov sees him as more motivated and more dedicated player in a dominant duo of men's tennis. The Italian has been on a role since the second part of 2023.

His rise has been built on structure, consistency and an almost obsessive commitment to daily improvement. We saw that following his US Open final defeat to Alcaraz.

Carlos bested Jannik in four sets, and the San Candido native worked hard to improve serve. The result? Four titles in the final five tournaments of the season and a dominant indoor swing.

Every part of his game reflects precision and purpose. It's shaped by repetition and an unwavering focus on long-term growth rather than flashes of brilliance.

Per Yevgeny, that distinction becomes crucial. When projecting careers, the Russian places the Italian above the Spaniard, seeing him with more Major trophies when they finish their careers.

While talent can open doors, the sustained motivation and dedication often determine how far a player ultimately goes. Their era is defined by marginal gains and physical demands.

Sinner's approach suggests a foundation designed for longevity and accumulation of success. He trails Alcaraz by two Major crowns ahead of 2026, but that can change quickly, especially following their domination.

As both players continue to push each other higher, the contrast between artistry and discipline may end up defining not just their rivalry but the legacy of their generation.

Carlos and Jannik are preparing for the Australian Open. If they best six rivals, they will arrange their fourth consecutive title clash at Majors and write more history books.

The Italian is the defending champion, while the Spaniard seeks his first trophy in Melbourne.

"It seems to me that Carlos is definitely more talented, but Jannik is more motivated and more dedicated. And if I have to choose between talent and work ethic, I choose work ethic. I'm leaning towards Jannik having the better career," Yevgeny Kafelnikov said.
