The Wisconsin men’s and women’s swim teams earned victories in San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 3.
The Badgers won the women’s meet with 117 points, ahead of UCLA (100), UC-San Diego (44) and Tulane (1).
The Wisconsin men defeated UC-San Diego 175.5-86.5.
The Badgers opened the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay. Maggie Wanezek, Brooke Corrigan, Hailey Tierney an Abby Wanezek got to the wall in 3:33.46. Maggie Wanezek won the 100 backstroke in 51.22 and 200 IM (1:56.74).
Wisconsin’s Blair Stoneburg won the 100 free in 9:41.96, ahead of teammate Maddie Waggoner (9:44:74). Lucie Delmas won the 200 butterfly (1:59.18). Hazal Ozkan won the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.09.
UCLA’s Jada Duncan won the 200 free in 1:46.28, just ahead of Stoneburg (1:46.43). Duncan also won the 100 free (48.81) and 100 fly (52.27). Claudia Yovanovich won the 50 free (22.79) for the Bruins. Rosie Murphy had a four-second win in the 200 back (1:54.01).
UCLA’s Josie Arbuckle, Gizem Guvenc, Fiona Schere and Ava Lachey won the 200 free relay.
UC-San Diego’s Chloe Braun won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.63, just holding off Ozkan (1:00.68) and Corrigan (1:00.92). UCSD’s Edana Huang won the 500 free in 4:35.66.
In the men’s meet, Wisconsin’s Nathan Welker, Ben Wiegand, Charlie Jones and Luukas Vainio won the 400 medley relay in 3:09.98.
Vainio won the 200 free in 1:34.38. Welker won the 100 backstroke in 47.44. Wiegand won the 50 free in 20.03 and 100 free in 43.93. Jones won the 500 free (4:24.61).
Wisconsin’s Dominik Mark Torok won the men’s 100 free in 9:08.43, ahead of UC-San Diego’s Zach Tower (9:09.62). Wisconsin’s Brayden Henkel won the 100 breaststroke (53.85). Enzo Solitario won the 200 fly in 1:44.72 and 200 IM (1:48.56). Adam Graham won the 200 back in 1:45.81. Drew Gaerthofner won he 200 breast (1:59.02).
Wiegand, Cooper Scharff, Gaerthofner and Vainio won the 200 free relay in 1:19.52.
UCSD’s Hunter Cehelnik won the 100 fly (47.05).
