Coco Gauff has just delivered another big time performance against Iga Swiatek after beating the Pole 6-4 6-2 at the United Cup.
After Taylor Fritz was beaten by Hubert Hurkacz in the opening match of the United States and Poland semifinal tie at the United Cup, it was up to the reigning French Open champion to save the American team.
And right out of the gate, Gauff opened a 4-1 lead. While Swiatek managed to get the break back, the fourth-ranked American still won the first set after claiming a break in the 10th game – the game in which the world No. 2 was serving to stay in the opener.
After winning the last two games of the first set, Gauff carried the momentum into the start of the second set and won the opening five games before serving out for the match in the eighth game.
Now, a mixed doubles match will decide the winner. Initially, the teams have nominated Gauff and Christian Harrison on one side, and Swiatek and Hurkacz on the other side, respectively.
Gauff beats Swiatek for the fourth time in a row
After beating Swiatek at the 2024 WTA Finals, the 21-year-old also beat the six-time Grand Slam champion at the United Cup and Madrid last year.
Yesterday, when asked if she would think about the 2025 United Cup loss suffered to Gauff, the Pole insisted that meant nothing.
"Well, we played so many matches with Coco that I don't really, like, look at the previous ones so much. Like if I would have to do that every time, I would be thinking for a long time because we played many matches against each other," the Polish tennis star said before the match.
"But yeah, honestly after last year's tournament, I didn't really analyze this match that much. I was already kind of focused on Australian Open. For sure I'm going to sit with Wim tomorrow and he will watch it and he will give me the tips."
Despite the loss today, Swiatek still leads the head-to-head against Gauff 11-5.
