Hubert Hurkacz had to go through the darkest moment of his entire career due to a knee injury.
The Polish ace played very little last season and almost never had the opportunity to express his best tennis, being conditioned by pain and having the awareness that he could not go on like that. The former world number 6 then decided to undergo surgery and was away from the professional tour for about seven months, avoiding forcing the times and returning to action only when he felt in good shape.
Against all odds, the former Wimbledon semifinalist played really good tennis at the United Cup proving that he has finally overcome the worst moment.
He also took away the satisfaction of beating world number 3 Alexander Zverev, who did not have a polite behavior towards him, venting all his frustration. Hubert did not respond to Sascha's phrases, testifying to his enormous class once again and making it clear that he only cares about his performance right now.
Hurkacz surprised everyone
If he continues to play this way and further improves his shape, Hurkacz could be dangerous for anyone at the upcoming Australian Open. The first Grand Slam of the new year begins on Sunday, January 18 at Melbourne Park and the Polish star will benefit from playing without excessive pressure.
Hurkacz himself confided that he was surprised by the level shown at the United Cup, in which he obtained four wins in five matches played.
"I'm speechless" – admitted the former Top 10. "I am happy both for myself and for my country, we have shown that we are very strong in the world of tennis. I'm proud of our victory and it's a fantastic feeling, I want to thank every single member of the team. We enjoyed every single moment of this competition" – he added.
'Hubi' will be able to test his level at the AO in a few days, with the confidence that he is finally back to the top.
