SUNRISE, Fla. – When Stephen Buchanan woke up Saturday, he thought he was wrestling Pat Downey later that night.
But as the combat sports world is wont to do, a little bit of chaos and confusion was on the menu before Buchanan could step on the mats at RAF 5 at Amerant Bank Arena. When former UFC middleweight title challenger Yoel Romero missed weight, and badly, current UFC middleweight Bo Nickal called no joy and took the night off rather than face him in a freestyle wrestling match.

But Buchanan, apparently unfazed by the idea of taking on the 48-year-old Cuban Olympic medalist, stepped up. Not only did he beat Romero, who returned to wrestling for the first time in two decades in December for a win over Downey at RAF 4, but he tech-falled him and moved himself into a big spotlight.
And with that, Buchanan said he not only would take a wrestling match against Nickal, but he’s interested in one against former UFC fighter Jon Jones.
