Texas A&M isn’t prioritizing pursuing a quarterback in this transfer cycle, but when former Aggie commit Husan Longstreet re‑entered the portal, it naturally sparked some curiosity. Any time a familiar name becomes available, fans wonder whether the staff might at least reach out to his camp.
The reality is that barring injury, Marcel Reed is almost a lock to be Texas A&M’s starting quarterback in 2026. The concern isn’t at the top of the depth chart — it’s what sits behind him. One of the defining quirks of college football, especially before the NIL era, was that losing your starter didn’t automatically mean your season was over.

A recent example came at Ole Miss, where Austin Simmons won the job in the offseason but went down early. Division II transfer Trinidad Chambliss stepped in, seized the opportunity, and never gave the job back, ultimately leading the Rebels to the second round of the playoffs.
With that in mind, adding an experienced quarterback to compete for the No. 2 spot behind Reed isn’t unreasonable, especially with only a few days left in the portal window. Miles O’Neill’s transfer to North Carolina leaves the Aggies with Brady Hart — a player the staff is high on but inexperienced — and incoming freshman Helamen Casuga. A veteran presence in a Jacob Zeno‑type role would stabilize the room and give A&M a more proven insurance policy.
Does Longstreet fit that mold? No. The staff may have checked in to gauge his interest, but he was never a priority target. Too many other roster needs sit ahead of the quarterback, and the position remains at the bottom of the board for this cycle.
And now the question is settled: Longstreet is officially off the list as a potential backup option for Reed, announcing his commitment to LSU — a program that has already added two other portal quarterbacks.
