Emma Navarro failed to build on her strong Adelaide start as the No. 6 seed is out of Adelaide in the quarterfinal stage after being routed 3-6 3-6 by Diana Shnaider.
Entering this week, the American tennis star had been on a three-match losing streak, dating back to late 2025.
However, at the start of her second Adelaide campaign, Navarro showed no signs of bad form as she ousted Emerson Jones 6-3 6-3 and also saw off Yulia Putintseva 6-1 6-4. Against Putintseva, the 2024 US Open semifinalist was especially impressive, delivering a very clean display and beating the Kazakh after claiming three breaks and not losing her serve once.
Today, it was a completely different story for the American No. 6 seed, who sprayed five double faults in the first set and lost her serve three times.
At the start of the second set, Navarro stabilized on her serve and got through her opening three service games without facing a break point. But then, Shnaider broke the American in the eighth game for a 5-3 lead before serving out to love the following game to wrap up things in two sets.
Navarro loses again to Shnaider
Following today's Adelaide clash, world No. 23 Shnaider now owns a 3-1 head-to-head record against Navarro. The Russian also won their first two clashes in 2024 Paris and 2024 Bad Homburg, while the American's lone win in their matchup came at Wimbledon in 2024.
In the Adelaide semifinal, Shnaider could face fellow Russian Mirra Andreeva. No. 3 seed Andreeva plays against Maya Joint.
Meanwhile, Navarro will now fly to Melbourne, where she is due to face Magda Linette in the first round. It will be the second meeting between the two. The American previously beat the Pole in Toronto two years ago.
Navarro reached the Australian Open quarterfinal last year.
