NCAA announces new transfer portal window for college basketball

by

The ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics has brought an updated ruling on the transfer portal for men’s and women’s college basketball.

According to the NCAA on Wednesday, the Division I Cabinet approved a 15-day transfer window that is set to begin following the conclusion of each respective NCAA Tournament championship game. The NCAA Women’s Tournament championship is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 5, with the men’s set for Monday, April 6, this year. This change was recommended by the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Oversight Committee in November, but is now official.

There will also be a new change for players affected by a coaching change. Those impacted will have 15 days following the hire of a new coach or public announcement of the decision. If a replacement is not announced within 30 days, the student-athletes will still have 15 days to enter the portal at the conclusion of that time.

Before this new ruling took effect, the previous portal opened in March, creating chaos across college basketball due to postseason matchups. It created an environment in which players, coaches, and fans were affected by athletes departing for their next destinations. In turn, coaches of teams in the NCAA Tournament were being forced to emphasize portal recruiting and retention while keeping their teams focused on the task at hand.

With the football transfer window being moved (Jan. 2-Jan. 16) back to Oct. 7 for the same reason, it was only a matter of time before other sports transitioned their respective dates to post-tournament timeframes. For Texas A&M head coaches Bucky McMillan and Joni Taylor, this provides ample opportunity to maintain focus on closing out the season with their current Aggies before adding potential portal pieces and having players announce their decision to leave Bryan-College Station, Texas.
