The match between two of the most popular chess streamers in the world, IMs Levy Rozman and Julien Song, got off to a hard-fought start as both sides missed wins in time pressure before the game ended in a draw.
Rozman was slightly better out of the opening in a Colle-System that strongly resembled a French Defense. However, a small slip from Rozman allowed Song to force a pawn-up endgame. Under pressure, Rozman kept the game complicated, and as both sides reached their final seconds, he managed to reach an objectively drawn position. Yet, that was just the start of the fireworks, as Rozman’s 56.e6?? gave Black a chance to weave a mating yet.
Song missed his opportunity and 56…Bd8 57. g6 Rg4?? gave White a winning moment. Rozman couldn’t make the most of it either, forcing a rook and knight against a rook ending. The extra knight was an advantage, but it shouldn’t be enough to force a win. Song was up to the defensive task and held the ending without difficulty.
The match continues with another classical game on January 16, when Song will have the white pieces. The third day of the match will feature four rapid games, followed by eight blitz games on the final day.
