Updated SEC basketball standings after Texas A&M’s win over Texas

by

Texas A&M (14-4, 4-1 SEC) is off to its best start in conference play under first-year head coach Bucky McMillan, coming off Saturday’s critical road win over rival Texas, defeating the Longhorns 74-70 behind Rashaun Agees’ double-double, paired with senior guard Rylan Griffen’s 17 points, including four 3-pointers.

After defeating Texas for the first time since 2002, McMillan has continued to defy expectations, leading a team full of transfers to a 4-1 SEC record, headlined by the controversial, but nevertheless epic, comeback road win over Auburn just two weeks ago.

Elsewhere in the SEC, seven of the sixteen teams are tied at 3-2, and before defeating the Longhorns, Texas had reeled off consecutive wins over Alabama and Vanderbilt, looking like one of the more formidable teams in the conference. However, the Florida Gators, who are the defending National Champions, are starting to find their groove after a slow start in nonconference play, and are tied with the Aggies at 4-1.

Next month, Texas A&M’s schedule reaches its toughest stretch, including road trips against Alabama, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas, and the Aggies will host Florida on Saturday, February 7. Right now, winning nine, 10, or more conference games should result in an NCAA Tournament berth, and winning several road games along the way wouldn’t hurt either.

Before the Aggies host Mississippi State next Wednesday, here are the updated SEC basketball standings after Week 5.
