WWE’s acquisition of AAA wasn’t just about gaining control of the Mexican promotion—it also locked in one of lucha libre’s hottest stars on a whole different level.
El Hijo del Vikingo isn’t like the rest of the AAA roster. According to PWInsider Elite while most AAA talent are now signed under Fillip, the Mexico-based entertainment holding company, Vikingo is officially signed directly to WWE.
This distinction matters. WWE owns 51% of AAA through TKO Group Holdings, while Fillip controls the remaining 49%. Most of AAA’s stars fall under Fillip’s umbrella as part of this new ownership structure. But Vikingo, seen as a top-tier priority for WWE even before the acquisition was finalized, stands out with a full WWE deal in hand.
That special status is already being reflected in his career path. After defending the AAA Mega Championship against Chad Gable during Worlds Collide on June 7, 2025, Vikingo returned to AAA TV on January 17, 2026, and won a #1 contender’s match for the very same title—this time operating under the new WWE-led regime.
The original deal to acquire AAA was made public during WrestleMania 41 weekend in April 2025. Since then, the Peña-Roldán family has remained involved in daily business operations. However, with WWE taking the reins creatively and financially, moves like signing Vikingo outright show exactly where the company wants to go with international talent integration.
This isn’t just about one wrestler. It’s about WWE setting a precedent—and Vikingo might be the blueprint for how WWE uses its new global partnerships to elevate select stars beyond traditional boundaries.
