Lady Cougars fight off Lancers’ rally, 39-37

South Decatur held a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter against visiting Edinburgh, but the Lady Lancers would not go away.

Raegan Benge hit a free throw with 6:27 to play in the fourth to put South up 36-26. South’s next point came on a Raegan Benge free throw with 3:26 to play to make it 37-31. After a Lilly Murray free throw at the 3:10 mark to make it 38-31, Edinburgh closed the deficit to 38-36 with :22 left and the Lady Lancers had the ball under their bucket.

A short jumper did not fall for Edinburgh. South’s Dalilah Martin went to the other end and hit a free throw with :09.3 to go with extend the lead to 39-36. Edinburgh was fouled with just :00.3 on the clock and hit 1-of-2 free throws to make the final margin 39-37.

South improves to 9-11 overall and 5-1 in the MHC. Edinburgh drops to 9-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

South held Edinburgh scoreless in the first eight minutes, leading 14-0. Riley Benge scored nine points for South in the quarter.

In the second, Edinburgh flipped the momentum and went on a 17-3 run to tie the game at 17-17 at the half. Two free throws by Sophia Wittkamper and one by Murray was all for South in the second quarter.

South got things back on track offensively in the third quarter, outscoring Edinburgh 15-7. Riley Benge and Raegan Benge combined for 10 points in the quarter for South.

In the fourth, South was just 5-of-11 from the charity stripe, but the 13-7 run by the Lady Lancers was not enough as South held on for the 2-point win.

For South, Riley Benge tallied 17 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Raegan Benge finished with seven points, a team-high 16 rebounds and three assists. Martin added five points, five rebounds and a team-high four assists. Wittkamper had four points and one rebound. Murray finished with three points and two rebounds. Brynklie Ortman had three points and six rebounds. Lyndsey Shireman grabbed one rebound.

Edinburgh was led by Kenna Streeval with 15 points and Bella Turner with 11 points.

South hosts Trinity Lutheran (16-4) Saturday.
