Last season, the Florida Panthers successfully defended their Stanley Cup as they bested the Edmonton Oilers for the second straight year. However, as of November, the Colorado Avalanche had taken over the top spot on the odds board, with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights right behind. The Avalanche are also odds-on favorites to win the Presidents’ Trophy as the regular season points leader. The Lightning have passed the Hurricanes as Eastern Conference favorites on the strength of their red-hot January run which has seen them win 13 of their past 14 games, with the only loss coming in overtime.
The Detroit Red Wings haven’t been quite as hot, but are still an impressive 11-4-1 in their past 15 and and up to second in the Atlantic Division and third in the Eastern conference. Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider and company were 90-1 to win the Stanley Cup on Opening Night, but their odds have shortened to 65-1. The Red Wings’ Thursday opponent, the Minnesota Wild, experienced a bump themselves, going from 45-1 to 25-1 after acquiring defenseman Quinn Hughes, and now reside at 20-1.
The Wild are slight -142 moneyline favorites in this Thursday night matchup (9:30 p.m. ET, live on ESPN).
The Washington Capitals are fourth in odds to win the Eastern Conference and much is thanks to Logan Thompson, the top-ranked goalie in ESPN Fantasy hockey. The Dallas Stars are +660 to win the Western Conference and 35-1 to win the Central Division, second behind the Avalanche, and sit third in the NHL weekly Power Rankings.
Elsewhere on the board, the Toronto Maple Leafs are 50-1 to snap their Cup drought (opened 16-1), the New York Rangers are 300-1 (opened 30-1), and the Boston Bruins sit at 250-1 after opening the regular season at 100-1.
