Hubert Kos Impresses in 200 Back as Texas Men, Louisville Women Win Eddie Reese Texas Showdown AM Competition

Following a series of electric performances in Friday’s finals session, the Eddie Reese Texas Showdown concluded with one more session Saturday morning. The combined scoring of the two morning sessions gave the Texas men 540 points to beat Louisville (459) and Ohio State (159), but the Cardinals were the top women’s team by one point over Texas, 488 to 487, with Ohio State third (227).

Back into collegiate competition for the first time this season, Hubert Kos put up the country’s fastest time in the 200 backstroke. He clocked 1:38.14, well ahead of the 1:39.00 from Arizona State’s JT Ewing that had previously been the top time. Kos is the heavy favorite for the NCAA title in the event after he clocked the fastest time ever at 1:34.21 last season. Since then, the 22-year-old Hungarian has also won a long course world title in the event and lowered the short course meters world record.

Nate Germonprez won the 50 and 100 breaststroke Friday, and he added two further wins Saturday. He clocked 1:53.40 for first in the 200 breast before going  47.03 to win the 100 IM by eight hundredths over Kos. Garrett Gould placed first in the 50 freestyle (19.05) while Ryan Branon came out on top in the 200 butterfly (1:42.39). Aiden Hammer had the top performance in the 1650 free with a time of 14:49.19, entering him into the national top-10 in the event, and 1-meter diving went to the Longhorns’ Nicholas Harris (359.33).

The Louisville women continue to benefit from the midseason addition of Anastasia Gorbenko. The Israeli swimmer won the 200 breast in 2:07.45, good for the eighth-best mark in the country, and she later dominated the 100 IM with a time of 52.42. Teammate Julia Dennis blasted a time of 21.55 for first in the 50 free.

In the women’s 1650 free, Texas’ Jillian Cox swam a time of 15:44.61 to win by more than 12 seconds. She was within three seconds of her season best of 15:41.70, the top time in the country, and ahead of the current No. 2 performer (Georgia’s Kennedi Dobson). Additionally, Sarah Rodrigues of the Longhorns won the 200 back in 1:53.08, and Campbell Stoll won the 200 fly (1:53.17).
