The Mets are set to add a respected veteran to their bullpen, having agreed to a Minor League contract with right-hander Craig Kimbrel, according to a report Saturday night by MLB Network insider Jon Heyman. The club has not confirmed the deal, which includes an invite to Spring Training, according to Heyman.
With 440 career saves, the 37-year-old Kimbrel is second to Kenley Jansen (476) among active pitchers, and he’s fifth on the all-time list. Kimbrel has a 2.58 ERA across 16 seasons, seven of which he spent with NL East clubs.
The Mets bolstered their bullpen in December, signing closer Devin Williams to a three-year contract and Luke Weaver to a two-year deal while losing Edwin Díaz to the Dodgers in free agency. Should he make the roster for his 10th big league club, Kimbrel would present manager Carlos Mendoza with another late-innings option.
