Maize and blue ties run through Seahawks–Patriots Super Bowl

by

The biggest prize in the NFL is the Super Bowl, and the matchup was set on Sunday with the Seattle Seahawks beating the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots beating the Denver Broncos.

The game in two weeks will have something of a maize and blue flair, particularly for the NFC team, especially with the coaching staff. The Super Bowl will pit a former Michigan defensive coordinator, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald, against former Ohio State linebacker and coach Mike Vrabel, who leads the Patriots.

But that’s not all — several Seahawks players come from Michigan football, as well.

With that in mind, here is who has Michigan ties who will be participating in the Super Bowl:

Seattle Seahawks

  • Head coach Mike Macdonald (former Michigan defensive coordinator, 2021)

  • Special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh (former Michigan coach, 2015-23)

  • Inside linebackers coach Chris Partridge (former Michigan coach, 2015-19, 2023)

  • Edge rusher Mike Morris (graduated after 2022 season)

  • Tight end AJ Barner (via Indiana, 2023)

  • Center Olu Oluwatimi (via Virginia, 2022)

  • IR: Running back Zach Charbonnet (2019-20, transferred to UCLA)

New England Patriots

  • Offensive lineman Michael Onwenu (graduated after 2019)

For Jay Harbaugh and AJ Barner (as well as Chris Partridge, though he was fired on the eve of the Maryland game in 2023), it’s an opportunity to build upon their national championship season in 2023.

It has been a big week for former Michigan coaches, with fellow former defensive coordinator Jesse Minter having been named the Baltimore Ravens head coach, replacing his former boss, John Harbaugh.
