NBA Players Respond After Alex Pretti Killed During Minneapolis Protest

by

The sports world paused this weekend as Minneapolis continued to grapple with the fatal shooting of intensive care nurse Alex Pretti, who was killed by a federal officer during an immigration enforcement operation.

The tragedy led to the postponement of theย  Timberwolvesโ€™ home game against the Warriors and sparked an emotional outpouring from athletes, coaches, and leagues across the country.

โ€œFor the second time in less than three weeks, weโ€™ve lost another beloved member of our community in the most unimaginable way,โ€ Chris Finch said speaking to reporters. โ€œAs an organization, we are heartbroken for what we are having to witness and endure and watch, and we just want to extend our thoughts, prayers and concern for Mr. Pretti, his family, all the loved ones and everyone involved in such an unconscionable situation in a community that we really love, full of people who are by nature, peaceful and prideful.โ€

Finch added that the game had been postponed because โ€œplaying basketball just didnโ€™t feel like the right thing to do,โ€ later saying, โ€œThis is my home, and I love living hereโ€ฆ and itโ€™s just sad to watch what is happening, you know, on the human level.โ€

A moment of silence was held at Target Center before tipoff, though it was quickly overtaken by fans shouting chants directed at Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards spoke following the game.

โ€œI just love Minnesota, all the love and support that they show me,โ€ Edwards said. โ€œSo Iโ€™m behind whatever theyโ€™re with. Me and my family are definitely praying for everybody.โ€

Around the league, reactions continued to pour in. The NBA Players Association released a statement saying that โ€œNBA players can no longer remain silent,โ€ while Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton wrote simply on X, โ€œAlex Pretti was murdered.โ€

Former Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns added, โ€œWhat is happening in the Twin Cities and the Great North Star State is heartbreaking to witnessโ€ฆ I stand with the people of Minnesota.โ€
