Winning a national title in women’s college basketball is rare, but winning multiple titles is a feat reserved for the absolute elite. The history of the NCAA tournament is dominated by a small group of programs that have turned excellence into a yearly expectation. From the pioneers of the 1980s to the modern super-teams, here are the ten schools that have filled their trophy cases with the most hardware in Division I history.

Louisiana Tech holds the distinction of being the first-ever NCAA Division I champion, defeating Cheyney 76-62 in the inaugural 1982 title game. They added a second championship in 1988 and appeared in four of the first seven finals. Although they haven’t reached a title game since 1998, their early dominance laid the groundwork for modern-day football.

The Trojans were the first program to successfully defend their title, winning back-to-back championships in 1983 and 1984. That 1984 loss famously left legendary coach Pat Summitt winless in her first trip to the national championship game.
