Jan. 30—MORGANTOWN — West Virginia has been nothing but hot on the recruiting trail and even in the transfer portal. Most of the players the Mountaineers want to land and shouldn’t get, Rich Rodriguez somehow secures. However, Thursday night, WVU didn’t receive good news for the future.
Class of 2027 4-star running back Armand Hill has reportedly decommitted from the Mountaineers, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett. Hill had been committed since March 2025.

Hill was WVU’s lone pledge for the 2027 class, and he was a big splash early on in Rodriguez’s second stint in Morgantown. Hill rushed for over 3, 200 yards and 43 touchdowns in his first two years playing high school ball. Out of West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, he is rated as the 13th-best player in Pennsylvania and the No. 21 running back in the class. Hill picked the Mountaineers after receiving offers from Michigan, Penn State, Syracuse, Pitt and Maryland.
A lot has happened since Hill committed last March. WVU finished with a 4-8 record, a lot of players entered the portal, more players joined and there were some coaching changes. WVU added a flurry of talented running backs this offseason, including last year’s FBS leading rusher Cam Cook and 4-star Amari Latimer. But the biggest change this offseason in the running back room was that RB coach Larry Porter left for Auburn. He was replaced by former Kentucky RB coach Jay Boulware. All those factors could’ve gone into Hill’s decision.
Hill is the second player from the class of 2027 to decommit. 3-star linebacker Minikon Johnson decommitted in November. It’s very early in the cycle, and the class of 2026 is still wrapping up, with the final signing day period approaching. On social media, offensive assistant and a major recruiter for WVU, Travis Trickett, posted a graphic that said the 2027 class is up next.
