Why Dawn Staley said South Carolina star Ta’Niya Latson missed second half vs Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. — South Carolina women’s basketball star guard Ta’Niya Latson didn’t play in the second half of the 81-51 win against Auburn on Jan. 29.

The senior guard played 16 minutes in the first half and had five points for the No. 3 Gamecocks (20-2, 6-1 SEC.)

“She’s not feeling well so we just decided to hold her out and her teammates stepped up in a big way,” South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said. “Filled the void of not having her.”

South Carolina finished without two starters against the Tigers (13-8, 2-5). Freshman guard Agot Makeer didn’t play after she subbed out with 6:18 left in the first quarter.

Staley said Makeer is in pain but didn’t give a lengthy injury or status update. Makeer didn’t return to the bench by the end of the first quarter but shortly after the second quarter started, she walked in with what looked like some type of wrap or heating pad on her thigh or hip, sitting on the bench still in her uniform.

Latson was coming off a team-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting with five rebounds and five assists in the 103-74 win vs Vanderbilt on Jan. 25.

Latson is playing in her only season at South Carolina after transferring from Florida State. She missed the first three SEC games of the season after spraining her ankle on Dec. 28 against Providence.

She returned for the Jan. 11 win over Georgia and is averaging 15.7 points per game, the second most on the team.

South Carolina doesn’t play its usual Sunday game and instead plays Monday, Feb. 2 at Texas A&M (8 p.m. ET, ESPN2).
