The veteran gave everything against the rival 16 years younger than him. Novak made a flawless start in his 11th Australian Open final, serving well and providing two breaks and building the advantage after 33 minutes.
However, the 24-time Major winner could not maintain that pace in sets two and three. Alcaraz stepped in and provided four breaks to take them 6-2, 6-3 and forge the crucial advantage.
Djokovic gave everything in the fourth set especially after denying six break points in the second game. The Serb followed the Spaniard's pace and even created a break chance at 4-4 that could have kept him in contention.
However, Novak sprayed a forehand error and allowed Carlos to close the game. The 22-year-old stepped in on the return at 6-5, welcoming the veteran's mistake and sealing the deal in just over three hours.

Thus, Alcaraz became the youngest seven-time Major winner and the youngest owner of the Career Grand Slam. The El Palmar native wrote history books, and the most accomplished player of all time was there to congratulate him and drop the ultimate praise.
Novak described Carlos as one of the toughest opponents he has ever faced. For someone who spent his career battling with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, that statement speaks volumes about the young gun's trajectory.
"A battle for the ages. And of the ages. I gave it everything today, it was not quite enough. Bravo Carlos, little titan, young wizard of Oz. A worthy champion, a huge talent, a wonderful person and a history-maker.
And Australia, so much love. No place like the happy slam and no better atmosphere than I've experienced in the last two matches. Forever grateful. See you soon," Novak Djokovic wrote.
