Iowa women’s basketball remaining upbeat after West Coast swing

by

Despite No. 8 Iowa (18-4, 9-2 Big Ten) suffering an 88-65 loss at No. 2 UCLA (21-1, 11-0 Big Ten) at Pauley Pavilion on Sunday to make it an 0-for-2 West Coast road swing, Hawkeyes head women’s basketball coach Jan Jensen spoke positively about the team’s future.

“While fan bases could think the sky’s falling, I think we played two really good teams. I think we played them without arguably one of my best players, my best leader. And I’m playing a lot of young kids. They’re playing against a team that could contend for the national title. And I love my team. I’ve got to get my team remaining confident. I’ve got to get them better. I’ve got to be better,” Jensen said.

Iowa recently lost senior guard Taylor McCabe to a career-ending ACL tear during the first minute of the Hawkeyes’ Jan. 25 win over Ohio State.

While the absence of McCabe was evident in the team’s 3-point shooting and overall play against both USC and UCLA, Jensen and the Hawkeyes will undoubtedly put a plan in place to recalibrate as they get back to Iowa City before they welcome Minnesota (16-6, 7-4 Big Ten) to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Thursday, Feb. 5.
