The NFL has grown the Super Bowl into one of the world’s biggest sporting events over the six decades since the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs to win the first title.
The annual meeting between the AFC and NFC champions has now become much more than just a game. It’s an annual spectacle that combines sports and entertainment for the nearly 100 million people who will tune into the game worldwide.
Super Bowl 60 will be no different. While many will be tuning in chiefly to watch the New England Patriots square off against the Seattle Seahawks, others will want to see the many musical acts performing before and during the game.
The Super Bowl halftime show is the marquee non-football event of the big game. That said, many will also be interested in who will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the premiere, as it is the most heralded of the pregame performances.

Who is singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl?
Singer Charlie Puth will perform the national anthem at the 2026 Super Bowl in Santa Clara. It will mark the 34-year-old Grammy Award nominee’s first appearance in the Super Bowl as a performer in any capacity.
Puth expressed excitement about earning the opportunity to perform the national anthem in an interview with Rolling Stone.
“I actually have always wanted to do this, and I recorded a little demo, just me singing with the Rhodes and sent it to Roc Nation,” Puth said. “I’ve been told Jay-Z loved it, and it got to [NFL Commissioner Roger] Goodell and they all said that I could do it.”
Who is Charlie Puth?
Puth is a singer, songwriter and record producer who was born and raised in New Jersey. He grew up playing the piano, learning jazz and studied at Manhattan School of Music Pre-College before attending Berklee College of Music and earning a degree in music production and engineering in 2013.
Puth rose to prominence in the early 2010s after song covers he posted to YouTube went viral. He appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2011 and performed a cover of Adele’s “Someone Like You” with Emily Luther.
In the years following his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Puth worked for DeGeneres’ eleveneleven label, released a couple of promotional singles, and collaborated on other music, including jingles and theme songs for YouTube personalities. Eventually, he released his debut single – “Marvin Gaye,” which featured Meghan Trainor – in 2015.
Puth has since released three albums – including Voicenotes, which was nominated for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical at the 61st Grammy Awards – and has a fourth coming out on March 27. He also collaborated with Wiz Khalifa on “See You Again,” which earned a Grammy Award nomination for Song of the Year and spent 12 weeks at No. 1 overall on the Billboard Hot 100.
The 34-year-old is also known for his singles “We Don’t Talk Anymore” (featuring Selena Gomez), “Attention,” “Light Switch” and “Left and Right” (featuring Jungkook).
Puth will become the first New Jersey native to perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl since Whitney Houston in 1991. The “Attention” singer cited Houston’s anthem performance as the best in Super Bowl history, and also mentioned Chris Stapleton’s as among the greatest ever.
“I just want to do my own thing with the hardest piece of music ever written,” Puth told Rolling Stone of his upcoming performance. “And I just wanna show people that I can do it. I feel like people don’t really think of me as, like, a stand-alone vocalist at times.”
