Brendan Rodgers contract with Red Sox

The Red Sox have agreed to a Minor League contract with infielder , a source told MLB.com’s Ian Browne on Thursday. The club has not confirmed the report.

Rodgers is a former No. 1 prospect in the Rockies’ system who has shown glimpses of what made him the No. 3 overall selection in the 2015 MLB Draft. But as a result of injuries and underperformance, he hasn’t reached that potential in the Major Leagues.

Rodgers, 29, made his big league debut with Colorado in 2019, and he spent his first six MLB seasons with the Rockies, producing a .726 OPS (90 OPS+) with 45 home runs and 5.9 WAR per Baseball Reference over 452 games. He proved to be a strong defensive second baseman, winning a National League Gold Glove Award in ’22.

The Rockies declined to tender Rodgers a contract following the 2024 campaign, and he signed with the Astros in February. He appeared in 43 games for Houston last season, slashing .191/.266/.278 with two home runs in 128 plate appearances.

Over the years, Rodgers has been hampered by a variety of injuries, including hip and left oblique issues in 2025.

There has been speculation that with a surplus of outfielders, Boston might try to move one in exchange for an upgrade at second or third base, but that type of deal hasn’t materialized. But the Red Sox appear to be adding depth at the keystone position in any case.
