Arizona State Extends Streaks over Rival Arizona with Sweep
Arizona State extended its streak of dominance over its in-state rival University of Arizona with a pair of victories on Friday.
ASU’s second-ranked men’s team claimed a ninth straight victory in the series with a 190-107 decision. It wraps up their dual-meet slate with a 9-0 record.
The women’s team, ranked 18th, edged past No. 23 Arizona, 158-142, for a fourth consecutive victory in the series.
The usual suspects led the way for Arizona State. Andy Dobrzanski did the breaststroke double, going 51.47 in the 100 and 1:54.79, with teammate Jonathan Itzhaki second in both. Ilya Kharun dominated fly as is his usual plan, just off his season-bests with times of 44.24 in the 100 fly and 1:38.58 in the 200.
Arizona State lined up a true A 200 medley relay, the squad of Adam Chaney, Dobrzanski, Kharun and Jonny Kulow going 1:20.81. Split 200 free relays took 1-2, with Quin Seider, Tommy Palmer, Chaney and Kulow winning by nearly eight tenths in 1:14.68.
The sprint depth was on display as usual. The nominal B 200 free relay included 50 free winner Tolu Young after he went 18.91 to win the 50 free ahead of Chaney (19.03) and Plamer. Remi Fabiani’s 41.57 led the way in the 100 free over Kulow. Fabiani also won the 200 free in 1:32.27, winning the rare battle of Luxembourg freestylers over Arizona’s Ralph Daleiden Cuferri.
Reece Grady won the 1,000 free in 9:00.84 and the 500 in 4:21.77, with teammate Noah Mudadu second in both. Michael Hochwalt claimed the 200 individual medley in 1:47.43.
Arizona managed to sweep the backstroke events. Duncan Henderson was a full second clear of the field with a time of 45.31 in the 100. Alex Desangles was third in the 100, then won the 200 back in 1:40.02. Haakon Naughton was second to Kharun in both fly events. The Wildcats swept the podium in both diving events, Luke Hernandez soring 384.68 to win 1-meter and Bo Bridges tallying 351.75 on 3-meter.
The Arizona State women won despite losing both relays in a meet of wild swings that included 1-2-3s in four of the first eight events. The first came via the Sun Devils in the 200 free, Albane Cachot going 1:44.34 to win. Cachot’s time of 47.82 in the 100 free also checked the sprint depth of Arizona.
Alexa Reyna did the distance double, in 944.61 in the 1,000 free and 4:45.12 in the 500. Julia Ullmann paced a 1-2-3 in the 200 fly by going 1:56.31 and then won the 100 fly in 52.10. Miriam Sheehan won the 100 back, Gerda Szyliagyi claimed the 200 back Jordan Greber and Sonia Vaishnani went 1-2 in the 200 IM.
The Wildcats claimed both relays. Lila Lillie, Eleni Gewalt, Patricija Kondraskaite and Julia Wozniak went 1:36.11 to edge Arizona by .04 seconds in the 200 medley. Riley Botton, Kondraskaite, Charlie Millard and Wozniak posted a time of 1:27.67 to best the field in the 200 free relay by less than a half-second.
Gewalt swept breaststroke, going 59.13 in the 100 (ahead of teammate Kelsey Wasikowski) and 2:11.39 in the 200. Wozniak threatened to turn the momentum with a 1-2-3 in the 50, her time of 22.20 leading Botton and Kondraskaite to the wall. But Cachot and Greber blanketed Wozniak’s runner-up result in the 100 free. Zara Ayasi swept diving for the Wildcats, winning 1-meter with a score of 299.40 points and 3-meter at 297.90, both in podium sweeps.
