ATP ace Matteo Berrettini breaks silence on mental health

Matteo Berrettini was also unlucky at the beginning of this season and was unable to play the Australian Open.

The former world No.6 – who had trained with enormous intensity during the pre-season together with his team – was ready to participate in the first Major of 2026, where he reached the semifinals in the 2022 edition (losing to Spanish legend Rafael Nadal, who lifted the trophy that year).

The Italian ace was supposed to make his debut at Melbourne Park against local idol Alex de Minaur in a particularly complicated match, but had to announce his forfeit due to an abdominal injury.

It is not the first time that the former Wimbledon finalist has been forced to stop because of this problem, which he had again felt during the 2025 edition of the Mutua Madrid Open. Matteo had to miss Roland Garros and the US Open last season, while he was eliminated in the first round at the Wimbledon Championships being in precarious shape.

Berrettini will play in Baires

After recharging his batteries, Berrettini is ready to start his season at the Buenos Aires ATP 250. This tournament has crowned some extraordinary champions throughout its history and will be a good head for the 29-year-old Italian, who will make his debut against Argentine player Federico Coria.

In a long interview with the Argentine magazine 'Marie Claire', the former world number 6 reflected on the issue of mental health: "I think it's one of the most important things for me. I take care of my diet, my training sessions, my sleep routine and everything else, but mental well-being has become crucial because of the injuries I've had in recent years."

Matteo also added: "There were some people who helped me a lot, especially when the pressure was higher and it wasn't easy to manage everything alone. I realized how important it was to take care of that aspect as well."

Everyone's hope is that Berrettini can enjoy the second part of his career without further injuries.
