Why Pakistan called for boycott India?
Since the snub of the Bangladesh cricket team from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, Pakistan went against the International Cricket Council and briefed that they will not take the field against their archrival India for the Group Stage match of the flagship tournament. The match is scheduled to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, which is a neutral venue between India and Pakistan.
It is believed that to show solidarity with Bangladesh, the government of Pakistan called off the boycott of the India match. The government announced the decision days after a meeting between Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. It was previously reported that the boycott India match call was heavily influenced by Naqvi, who is also an interior minister of the nation.
Mohsin Naqvi can take U-turn?
Though, from PCB’s end, there was no clear statement. The cricket board remained silent about their own thoughts for their match with India on February 15. In an initial step, the International Cricket Council urged the PCB to reconsider their decision, as the boycott call could attract a series of troubles for the Pakistan cricket.
Even after the request from the Council, PCB did not issue any clear statement regarding the matter. In the meantime, the T20 World Cup 2026 has begun according to the schedule. To solve the matter, ICC representatives meet with the PCB persons to discuss the situation and to find a way to solve it. As per the latest claims, Pakistan can change their decision and can release an official statement ahead of the highly valued match.
Salman Mirza showed a positive approach as well
On the other side, Pakistan fast bowler Salman Mirza stated to the press that they are not worried about the uncertainty over their match against India; they will prepare themselves according to the fixtures.
“We are preparing for the entire World Cup. We will play according to the team we have to play. It will be the decision of the government. We will do whatever is told to us,” Mirza said to the press. Pakistan will take on the USA in their second Group A match in Colombo on Tuesday evening.
If the fresh reports and indications are to be believed, then Pakistan is all set to face India as per the schedule date.
