Islam Makhachev campaigns for Ilia Topuria super fight at UFC White House — ‘I like this idea, I am ready’

Conor McGregor wanted to become the first UFC fighter in history to hold the featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight titles.

He failed.

While no UFC fighter has ever been able to join the three-belt club, that landmark achievement may still be within reach for reigning UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, who vacated the 145-pound strap to move up in weight.

Two down, one to go.

Here’s the good news: welterweight champion Islam Makhachev is already on board.

“I like this idea,” Makhachev told Telegraf. “If the UFC wants [this fight], I know a lot of MMA fans want this fight, I’m ready. Now in my division there are enough contenders who deserve to fight for the title. The UFC has to give me a new target, that’s it, I’m just waiting. We have the Ramadan month so I will not train for a month and after that I will slowly begin my training camp and I will be ready. The White House or other dates, I’ll be ready.”

And it gives matchmakers yet another reason to snub angry Arman Tsarukyan.

Helping the cause is the fact that nobody is excited to see Makhachev defend the welterweight title against former 170-pound kingpin Kamaru Usman. In addition, I don’t think UFC would miss the chance for another champ-champ fight to give Ian Garry the next shot against Makhachev.

UFC White House is scheduled for June 14 on Paramount+.
