Two days after he was released by the Phillies, outfielder Nick Castellanos agreed to a deal with the Padres, a source told MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell. The team has not confirmed.
Since the Phillies released Castellanos with one year left on his five-year, $100 million contract, the Padres will pay him the Major League minimum, while Philadelphia will pay the rest.
Castellanos, who turns 34 in March, hit .250 with 17 home runs, 72 RBIs and a .694 OPS in 2026. He struggled in the field, with his -12 Outs Above Average last season tied for last among 110 outfielders.
Castellanos notably had a heated dugout confrontation with manager Rob Thomson and the team’s coaching staff after being removed from a game in Miami on June 16 for defensive purposes. He was benched the following day.
A two-time All-Star, Castellanos has played for the Tigers, Phillies, Reds and Cubs during his career. He has slashed .272/.321/.464 with 250 home runs and 920 RBIs in 1,688 games.
