The University of Texas System Board of Regents is set to approve the contract of Longhorns defensive coordinator Will Muschamp at a meeting this week. The board will also approve raises for two assistants in the Feb. 18-19 conference. Muschamp will become one of the highest (if not the highest) paid assistants in college football.
Muschamp’s proposed deal is a guaranteed $8.4 million contract running through the 2028 season. The former Mack Brown defensive coordinator will make $2.7 million in 2026, $2.8 million in 2027 and $2.9 million in 2028. With team performance incentives, Muschamp’s compensation could increase as much 19%.

Last season, the highest-paid coordinator in college football was Jim Knowles at Penn State, who made $3.1 million a year. LSU’s Blake Baker and Michigan’s Wink Martindale each made $2.5 million annually.
After the Nittany Lions fired head coach James Franklin, Knowles moved on to become the defensive coordinator at Tennessee. Martindale has been fired by the Wolverines. Lane Kiffin retained Baker when he replaced Brian Kelly in Baton Rouge.
Texas paid former DC Pete Kwiatkowski $1.9 million in the final season on the Forty Acres.
Muschamp also will receive a dealer car, club memberships and a ticket allotment through the school. He received a one-time relocation payment of $35,000.

Muschamp spent the past two seasons as a defensive analyst for the Georgia Bulldogs. He was at Texas from 2008-2010 under Mack Brown and helped UT reach the 2009 BCS National Championship game.
Muschamp has served as head coach in Gainesville, defensive coordinator at Auburn, head coach at South Carolina and various roles for Kirby Smart at Georgia.
The Board of Regents will also approve a 5% raise to $1.525 million annually through 2028 for offensive line coach Kyle Flood and a 10% raise to $1.2 million annually through 2028 for linebackers coach Johnny Nansen. Nansen called the defense at the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl after Kwiatkowski was fired.
