The Georgia Bulldogs are integrating another former player in the coaching staff. Former defensive back Maurice Smith was promoted to an analyst role, according to Graham Coffey of Dawgs Central. He had spent the 2025 season in a volunteer role with Georgia.
Smith played with the Georgia Bulldogs in 2016 during his senior season after transferring from the Alabama Crimson Tide in a controversial move. Smith followed Kirby Smart from Alabama to Georgia. He was one of the staples of the secondary in Smart’s first year with the program. He was a team captain, and he registered 50 total tackles, three pass breakups, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. He had a memorable pick-six in Georgia’s upset of Auburn.

Smith went undrafted in the 2017 NFL draft, signing a contract with the Miami Dolphins. He played 13 total games with the Dolphins, registering a tackle in 2017 and five in 2018. He was part of their final cuts in 2019, but he latched on with the Washington Redskins, where he only played one game.
He had stops with the Cincinnati Bengals (2020) and Tennessee Titans (2020), but he never played another down of NFL football. He was selected in the 2023 XFL draft by the Vegas Vipers, but the Vipers folded when the XFL combined with the USFL to form the UFL.
He now joins an analyst role with the Georgia Bulldogs a couple of months after they lost key defensive analyst Will Muschamp. He signed with the Texas Longhorns to be their defensive coordinator. He will be getting paid a lot of money to coach Texas’s defense, but Georgia is looking to replace the role that Muschamp had with the team. Getting someone that was a leader in the secondary like Smith could be a step in the right direction.
