Feb. 24—MITCHELL — For the fifth time this season, Dakota Wesleyan’s Avery Broughton claimed the Great Plains Athletic Conference women’s basketball defensive player of the week award, the league office announced on Monday.

Last week, the Corsica native posted 11 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks and two assists in a loss to top-seeded Dordt at home, then added a new career-high 30 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, a steal and a blocked shot in a win at Northwestern to cap the regular-season schedule.

For the season, Broughton’s GPAC-leading 62 total blocks are 22 more than second place, and the 2.2 blocks per game average puts her in the top 16 nationally. The 6-foot-1 junior guard is also second in the conference for rebounding at 8.5 per game. For good measure, Broughton ranks tied for 11th in the GPAC in scoring at 14.4 points per game.

Broughton also won the weekly award on Dec. 1, Jan. 12 , Jan. 19 and Feb. 2.

DWU (22-6, 18-4 GPAC) earned the No. 2 seed in the GPAC tournament and is set to host seventh-seeded Doane (13-14, 10-12 GPAC) in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Corn Palace.
