Donna Vekic cries on the bench after first-set loss in Mexico

by

Donna Vekic is a tennis player who has had a lot of success in her career, but the crisis she has been experiencing for a long time seems to have caused frustration for the Croatian player.

The match against Cristina Bucsa was an opportunity for the 29-year-old to win, but the Spanish player was too much for her, and in the end she lost 6–3, 6–2.

During her career, Vekic had many outstanding performances, and her best career ranking is world No. 17, which she achieved less than two years ago.

Tough moments for Donna

This year, Donna has encountered huge problems and from tournament to tournament she fails to show the level of play that is expected of her. What attracted the most attention in this match was the moment when, after the first set, Vekic cried while sitting on the bench.

With this, she clearly showed how difficult it is for her to accept such a crisis and how difficult it is to deal with negative emotions.

Donna Vekic could now drop to the lowest ranking of her career and finish outside the top 100. The next tournament will be a chance for her to improve her performances and try to deal with much stronger opponents.

Considering that her last victory came in October 2025, when she defeated world number 344 Sahaja Yamalapalli, it speaks volumes about how difficult it is for her to find her form.

Season 2025: Many challenges

Donna Vekic started the 2025 season at a high level of play and at the beginning of the year she achieved her best ranking in singles, i.e. 17th place in the world.

The Croatian tennis player had several great performances, but the one that stands out the most is the semifinal of Wimbledon in 2024, where she showed that she can really handle top tennis players.

However, 2025 was a mixed year for her, considering that the Croatian tennis player achieved about 15 wins and 24 losses. It is still not the level she hoped to reach.
