Paralympic Champion Harvinder Singh adds Asian title to growing list of honours

Paralympic Champion Harvinder Singh won recurve men’s individual gold medal at the Beijing 2025 Asian Para Archery Championships

The 34-year-old world number one, who set a new competition record in qualifying earlier in the week, beat Thailand’s Hanreuchai Netsiri in the final, 7-1, to claim his first continental title.

Singh was dominant throughout the event but faced a scare in the semifinals, where a late wobble against China’s Zhao Lixue forced a shoot-off. He emerged victorious with a better nine.

He also won gold in the recurve mixed team event on Saturday.

The result means Singh – who was awarded India’s prestigious Padma Shri earlier this year – will head to the World Archery Para Championships in Gwangju this September as the favourite. He now has the rare opportunity to hold world, continental and Paralympic titles simultaneously.

In compound women, Singapore’s Nur Syahidah Alim successfully defended her title from Bangkok 2023, defeating China’s Juang Qiling with room to spare, 142-138.

China’s Gao Zihan, just 20 years old and making her international debut, won the recurve women’s title – bouncing back from a missed shot in Saturday’s mixed team final that cost China the gold. With Wu Chunyan absent, could a new star be on the rise?

China dominated the medal table once again, a testament to the nation’s long-term investment in para archery.

While this year’s focus now turns to the worlds in Korea, many athletes will already be looking ahead to the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan – a marquee event for Asian para nations, nearly on par with the Paralympics.

Who will grab the biggest prizes of all?
