BALTIMORE — The Mets on Tuesday placed outfielder Starling Marte on the 10-day injured list with a right knee bruise and activated Jesse Winker, who took Marte’s place on the roster.
Marte, 36, missed two months last season with a bone bruise in that same knee. He had been serving as the Mets’ regular DH, a role that Winker should now largely assume. Winker had been sidelined since early May due to a right oblique strain.
Prior to his injury, Winker was batting .239/.321/.418 with one home run in 24 games. Marte had been enjoying plenty of success as a part-time DH, with three consecutive multi-hit games prior to his injury.
The Mets designated reliever Zach Pop for assignment and transferred right-hander Tylor Megill to the 60-day IL to clear two 40-man roster spots for Winker, who was returning from the 60-day IL, and reliever Alex Carrillo, who was called up from Triple-A Syracuse.
