Florida basketball fills out roster with Sacramento State transfer guard

by

Florida basketball filled out its 2025-26 scholarship roster on July 14 by adding former Sacramento State guard Alex Kovatchev from the transfer portal.

A redshirt sophomore with three years of eligibility left, the 6-foot-5, 190-pound Kovatchev averaged 5.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 33 games during his true freshman season at Sacramento State in 2023-24 season. He appeared in just four games last season. In 37 career games, Kovatchev has shot 35.1% from the field and 28.6% from 3-point range.

Kovatchev will provide additional depth in a new-look Florida Gators backcourt that includes transfers Boogie Fland (Arkansas), Xaivian Lee (Princeton) and A.J. Brown (Ohio). The defending national champion Gators lost starting guards Walter Clayton Jr., Alijah Martin and Will Richard to eligibility and backup guard Denzel Aberdeen to the transfer portal (Kentucky).

Kovatchev joins returning All-SEC junior forward Alex Condon as the second Australian on UF’s 2025-26 roster. A Perth, Australia native, Kovatchev played with Condon at the NBA Global Basketball Academy in Australia.
