After struggling during the first two games of the 2025 FIBA U20 EuroBasket Tournament, Iowa basketball transfer Alvaro Folgueiras had a breakout game during Spain’s 89-71 victory against Finland on Monday.
While he has been getting quality playing time for Spain so far in the tournament, the 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward had only scored 10 points on a combined 3-for-21 shooting from the field entering Monday’s game against Finland.

Fortunately for Spain, Folgueiras was one of four players to score in double digits as he posted 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field, including 3-for-7 from 3-point territory in 25:21 of playing time. Folgueiras also collected four rebounds, two assists, and one steal to wrap up his performance in the win.
While the international tournament poses a different level of competition compared to the college ranks, the Hawkeyes hope Folgueiras can use the experience to build upon his standout 2024-25 season, where he averaged 14.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 54.8% from the field, 41.3% from 3-point territory, and 78.4% from the free-throw line with Robert Morris.
With the win over Finland, Spain avoids elimination from the tournament by finishing the group stage in third place in Group A with a record of 1-2. Spain moves into the Round of 16 Pairings where they will face Czechia (2-1) on Wednesday from Heraklion, Greece.
