Marc Mero opened up about the moment his WWE spotlight dimmed while his then-wife, Sable, shot straight to superstardom.
During his recent interview with The Wrestling Classic, Mero was asked if he expected her popularity to explode when they first joined the company—and whether it negatively affected his own run.
He didn’t dodge the question. Mero admitted that while her success may have hurt his WWE career, he was nothing but proud watching her rise.
“Um… never. You know, you never know what’s gonna happen. You hope, you know? We always hope for the best. But so proud of her. Oh my gosh, it was like—I don’t mean to compare it to this—but in a sense, it’s like being a father watching your little kid walk for the first time, then ride a bike, and seeing her just blossom into this amazing character. She did so well with it.”
He reflected on how quickly she adapted, despite having zero prior experience in wrestling.
“I mean, she had no experience. She had never done anything like this and was confident, could get out there and do her thing, and then learned how to wrestle—in WrestleMania of all matches! I worked with her on that kind of stuff. Was it detrimental to my career? Absolutely. Would I change anything? No way. No way.”
Mero also touched on her current life and how she’s stepped away from the spotlight. While he says they’re no longer in touch, he emphasized that there’s no drama—just distance.
“So glad that she took off the way she did. I would have liked to see her do more with fans today. I mean, I think people miss her. She’s kind of… you know, private now. Off the grid. But if that’s what she wants and that’s what her husband wants, God bless them. That’s their life. But I know fans miss her. At wrestling conventions, people always ask me about her. ‘Do I still talk to her? Have I seen her?’ We don’t have a relationship—not that there’s animosity or bad blood. We just have different lives.”
Marc Mero’s honesty about Sable’s impact on his career pulls back the curtain on one of wrestling’s most complicated power shifts—and shows he’s at peace with how it all turned out.
