USA’s Kevin Polish breaks continental compound record in Morelia

by

The USA’s Kevin Polish broke the continental men’s compound open qualifying record on Friday, shooting a 707 at the Venustiano Carranza stadium – three more than the previous Americas mark set by Matt Stutzman at the 2019 World Championships in Den Bosch.

His score was 20 points clear of the 2nd placed archer, Daniel Comeau of Canada.

Polish, the current world number three, becomes the top seed and the favourite in the competition, the first ever para archery World Cup leg in the Americas.

The American is a three time Paralympian and won the compound men’s open competition at the 2023 Para Pan-American Games in Santiago.

The W1 women’s continental qualifying record also fell, with Colombia’s Angie Alejandra Alarcon Moreno shooting 615 to top a field of just two athletes. Alarcon broke a record previously held by the USA’s Lisa Coryell.

The host nation’s Samuel Molina topped the recurve men’s open qualifying with 638, the best result for Mexico on the board. Molina, the world number five, is also the 2023 Para Pan-American champion along with many other senior continental titles.

Competition continues on Saturday with individual eliminations.
