The White Sox lone representative on the American League All-Star team is headed to the injured list.
Rookie right-hander Shane Smith was placed on the 15-day IL Saturday with a left ankle sprain. The move is retroactive to July 16.
There was no immediate word from the club on how or when Smith’s injury happened. The 25-year-old pitched a third of an inning in Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Atlanta and his most recent start was on July 11.
Smith became the second player ever to make the All-Star team in the year immediately following his selection in the Rule 5 Draft; he was the No. 1 pick by the White Sox in December. Smith was also the first White Sox rookie pitcher to make the All-Star team.
Smith carried a 2.85 ERA through his first 14 starts, but he has allowed 23 earned runs over his last five outings, covering 18 1/3 innings.
The White Sox also recalled reliever Wikelman González from Triple-A Charlotte, re-instated utility player Brooks Baldwin from the IL and optioned outfielder Will Robertson to Charlotte.
