Despite a down 2024 season, the Oklahoma Sooners are primed to rebound in the upcoming season on the back of several strong recruiting classes and talented transfer portal pickups.

Throughout 2024, it felt like the Sooners lacked the high-end talent necessary to compete with the top teams across the country. However, they are in a prime position right alongside the top teams in 2025 for total talent, and some coaching changes should have the Sooners feeling confident in their chances next season.
According to Bud Elliott’s Blue-Chip ratio, the Sooners are just one of 18 teams capable of realistically competing for a national championship.
The Sooners enter this season with a Blue-Chip Ratio of 70%, behind SEC competitors like Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M, Texas, and LSU but ahead of Penn State, Miami, Florida, Auburn, Michigan, USC, Clemson, Tennessee, and Florida State.

The Blue-Chip ratio is a metric that measures the overall talent of a team’s roster by comparing the percentage of four and five-star recruits (blue-chip prospects) to two and three-star signees over four years.
It feels like a stretch to imagine the Sooners competing for a national title, but it’s not hard to imagine the path is open with their talent and schedule. Brent Venables ripped off three straight top-ten recruiting classes in his first three seasons, and his 2025 class brought in several elite talents like Michael Fasusi, Ryan Fodje, Elijah Thomas, Trystan Haynes, and Courtland Guillory.
Additionally, they return several former elite recruits in players like PJ Adebawore, David Stone, Robert Spears-Jennings, Peyton Bowen, Jayden Jackson, Jayden Jackson, Kip Lewis, R Mason Thomas, and Taylor Tatum.

Combine those with talented transfer portal pickups in quarterback John Mateer, running back Jaydn Ott, wide receivers Javonnie Gibson, Keontez Lewis, and Isaiah Sategna, pass rusher Marvin Jones Jr., linebacker Kendal Daniels, and offensive linemen Derek Simmons, Luke Baklenko, and Jake Maikkula, and the Sooners boast arguably their strongest roster that Brent Venables has ever coached.
