One of the world’s most consistent performers in the 100 and 200 freestyle will miss the upcoming World Championships in Singapore because of a back issue. Siobhan Haughey announced her decision in an Instagram story Sunday evening (Monday morning in Asia).

“I’m sad to miss out on the opportunity to compete against the best in the world, but right now, I have to do what’s best for me,” Haughey wrote. “As elite athletes, we’re trained to push through the pain and fatigue to keep going. Yet at certain moments, the brave and hard thing to do is to take care of your body and wait patiently.”

This is not the first time that injuries have set back Haughey at inopportune times; previously, the Hong Kong native pulled out of the 2022 Worlds on the day of her first event.

Haughey has won four Olympic medals in her career, with silvers in the 100 and 200 free in Tokyo followed up with bronze medals over both distances in Paris. At the World Championships, she has won four medals, including gold in the 200 free at last February’s meet in Doha. Haughey also has six medals at the Short Course World Championships, with three consecutive golds in the 200 free. Before becoming a standout internationally, Haughey competed for the University of Michigan in NCAA competition.
