Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss staff kick off fall camp next week. But, before the last “free” weekend starts, the Rebels needed to add one more blue chip commitment. On Friday, Buford (Ga.) four-star safety Nascar McCoy announced his commitment to Ole Miss.
The 6-foot, 180 pound prospect chose Kiffin’s program over the likes of Georgia, Miami, Michigan, and Texas A&M. McCoy announced himself to the recruiting world as a sophomore when he made 38 tackles, three tackles for loss, and two interceptions for the dominant Peach State program.

“It came down to the scheme, development and relationships. Coaching stability is a key in my decision too,” McCoy said. “I want to be under coaches who will be there and develop me for the next three to four years.”
McCoy joins a trio of blue chip commits for Kiffin. Linebacker Izayia Williams, EDGE Landon Barnes, and fellow safety Craig Tutt make up a quartet of big-time commitments in the last few months for Ole Miss. The decision was simple for McCoy following his time in Oxford, Miss., for his official visit.
“It was great! Everything was amazing,” McCoy told On3. “The coaches were excited to accompany me, they were thrilled about me being there every step of the weekend.
“The community,” McCoy said. “It’s like a little hallmark town where you can be able to focus on yours goals and aspirations.”

This is a huge win on the recruiting trail for Ole Miss in a few ways.
In the spring, all the buzz surrounding McCoy was about Georgia, Ohio State, Southern Cal, Texas, and Georgia Tech. Ole Miss wasn’t even in the picture. This commitment is a reflection of thorough work on the trail by Kiffin, defensive coordinator Pete Golding, and safeties coach Wes Neighbors.
Second, snagging a prospect from a nationally-ranked program in a rival SEC state is a big deal. Ole Miss continues to grow as a program and a brand. Kiffin has helped grow it and then some, but the wins on the field and on the recruiting trail give it more and more cache.
McCoy has a ton of versatility and most believe he can play both safety and cornerback. He has length and can stay in phase with receivers because of it and his effortless, long stride. He was thrown into the fire early in his high school career at Buford and responded well. He may not be a day one contributor, but he’s a great one to add to your program and to your locker room.
