Jannik Sinner's decision to re-hire Umberto Ferrara as his fitness coach has generated a wide discussion in recent days, considering that the latter had been fired by the world number 1 about a year ago due to his involvement in the 'Clostebol case' together with Giacomo Naldi.
The Italian ace has already clinched two Grand Slam titles this season – lifting the trophy at the Australian Open and Wimbledon Championships respectively – but surprised everyone by parting ways with Marco Panichi and Ulises Badio without apparent justification just before the third Major of the season.
The 23-year-old from Sesto Pusteria was perfectly aware that the choice to reintegrate Ferrara into his team would create controversy, but he intends to go straight on his way without thinking about what others say about him.
Nargiso is surprised
After taking a short vacation after Wimbledon, the four-time Grand Slam champion returned to practice in Monte Carlo a few days ago and his next tournament will be the Cincinnati Masters 1000. Jannik decided not to go to Canada this year by skipping the Toronto Masters 1000, where he triumphed two years ago at the end of an amazing run.
Although he is very sorry for this choice, Sinner knows that he has to modulate his schedule well to be ready for the US Open scheduled in New York at the end of the summer. The world number 1 will arrive in Flushing Meadows earlier than usual because he will also play the mixed doubles tournament together with Emma Navarro.
In a recent interview with 'La Repubblica', former ATP ace Diego Nargiso highlighted Jannik's courage: "I was very surprised when I read that Ferrara would be back in Sinner's team. I think it is a very courageous choice on his part. He knows how Umberto works and wants to continue that path."
Nargiso also added: "Probably the dismissal of Ferrara had been an act more due than wanted. Umberto is an excellent professional and it is for this reason that Jannik wanted him back by his side."
