A wave of concern swept through the college basketball world on Thursday evening when news broke that longtime Kansas Jayhawks head coach Bill Self had been hospitalized after experiencing “concerning symptoms.”

The 62-year-old reportedly underwent a heart procedure, which, according to the university, went as planned. Kansas officials say Self is expected to make a full recovery.
Shortly after the news became public, the university released an official statement addressing the situation involving Self, who has served as the Jayhawks’ head coach since 2003.
“Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self felt unwell and experienced some concerning symptoms Thursday. He was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he had two stents inserted. The procedure went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery. He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.”

He’s led the Jayhawks to two national championships, three Final Four appearances, multiple conference titles, and has earned numerous Coach of the Year honors—both at the conference level and nationally. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017.
