The Boston Celtics have one open standard roster spot for the regular season. This spot opened after the team waived J.D. Davison from his non-guaranteed contract. However, don’t look for the Celtics to rush to fill that spot anytime soon.
Boston is just $1.9 million under the second apron. The Celtics aren’t going to finish this season as a second-apron team, as the team’s salary-reducing moves earlier this summer have indicated.
For now, expect the Celtics to leave that spot open. They may fill it in-season, when a prorated deal will fit in under the second apron. Boston may also consider further moves to shed salary, as they are currently $9.9 million above the first apron and $17.9 million above the luxury tax.
