Dominik Mysterio has made it clear — he wasn’t a fan of CM Punk’s short-lived World Heavyweight Championship win at SummerSlam, and in his eyes, Seth Rollins was the real hero of the night.
Speaking on My Mom’s Basement with Robbie Fox, Dominik was asked to give his reaction to the shocking sequence that closed out SummerSlam Night One. The night saw Punk defeat GUNTHER in a hard-hitting battle to win his first World Title in WWE in over a decade.
The victory was celebrated by many in MetLife Stadium, but minutes later, Rollins — who had been “injured” and off TV for weeks — made his way to the ring on crutches, blindsiding Punk and cashing in Money in the Bank to win the championship. Dominik admitted that Punk’s win didn’t sit right with him from the start.
“My initial thoughts were, you know, when he won, it was just like he didn’t really deserve it. It is what it is. You know, it’s part of the business. That’s what I love so much about the business — the emotional roller coasters it puts you through, right? Because I was so unhappy and I was like, ‘Why? I don’t think he should be in this position.’”
The former tag champion went on to explain that his mood instantly changed when Rollins appeared, calling the moment a complete game-changer for the entire show.
“But then you get the man, the myth, the legend, Seth Freakin’ Rollins, right? Comes out, saves the whole night, saves the show basically, and cashes in. As a fan, that caught me so off guard and I loved it because I wasn’t expecting it. I don’t think anyone was. He came out in the crutches and I was like, ‘Oh man, he’s probably just showing up telling him I’m next.’ Then he drops [the crutches]… it’s just the whole show and everything going into it just proves why Seth Rollins is one of the best to ever do it.”
Dominik’s comments play into the ongoing tension between Punk and Rollins, which has fueled WWE’s main event picture in recent months. While Punk’s supporters feel the quick cash-in robbed him of a deserved title reign, Rollins’ fans are calling it one of the smartest and most entertaining moments of the year.
