Aug. 6—MITCHELL — Although CeCe Morgan will be an eighth-grader at Mitchell Middle School this year, the Kernel girls basketball standout is beginning to garner attention from top colleges in the state.
Morgan received an offer to join the South Dakota State women’s basketball program, the Sanford Sports Academy announced on social media on Tuesday. The announcement follows Morgan receiving an offer from the University of South Dakota women’s basketball team in May.

Listed at 6-foot-1, Morgan made her Mitchell girls varsity debut on Jan. 14, 2025 against Huron. Appearing in 17 games off the bench, she averaged 4.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, which included a career-best 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting in the Kernels’ victory over Sioux Falls Lincoln on Jan. 31. Mitchell posted a 16-8 record and recorded its best finish at the Class AA girls state tournament since 2019 with a fifth-place result last year.
Having seen her stock rise over the summer, Morgan played on one of the Sanford Academy’s 13-and-under basketball teams, with her team winning their age division at the Summer Classic in Sioux Falls on July 27, achieving a perfect 4-0 record.
Last season, SDSU went 30-4 and finished with a perfect 16-0 conference record en route to the Summit League championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division I women’s basketball tournament. The Jackrabbits reached the round-of-32 before falling to eventual national champion Connecticut. USD is coached by second-year coach Carrie Eighmey as the Coyotes look to climb back up the Summit League ladder and return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2022.
Mitchell opens the new high school season with a road clash against Watertown on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
